Overview

Southwest Shipyard, LP provides a range of services to the marine industry, including barge and boat repair and new construction. The Structural Fitter position is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and installing metal structures according to blueprints and specifications.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural fitter assignments as assigned.
• Work safe and maintain a safe working environment.
• Notify foreman or supervisor of any safety and/or structural issues as warranted.
• Lay out, position, align and fit together fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications.
• Move parts into position manually, by hoist or crane, and align parts using jacks.
• Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and/or cutting torch.
• Give directions to the welder to build up low spots or short pieces.
• Tack weld as necessary.
• Consult with foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems.
• Attend safety meetings as required.
• Maintain a safe working environment.

Requirements

• Must have or be eligible to obtain a TWIC card.
• Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred).
• Ability to perform simple paperwork for filling out forms and logs.
• Good judgment skills and work initiative.
• Understanding of company Quality, Environmental & Safety manual and procedures.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Good communication skills and leadership ability in English & Spanish (Bi-lingual required).

Additional Information

• Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
• Day Shift: 6:00am - 3:30pm; Night Shift: 3:30pm - 12:00am (Midnight).
• Overtime and/or Weekend Availability required.
• Location: Brady Island (8502 Cypress St, Houston Tx 77012).
