Steward Machine Company is a multi-generational, family-owned business with over 100 years of history, specializing in heavy fabrication and machining. As a Welder Apprentice, you will receive hands-on training in advanced welding techniques while contributing to impactful projects in a supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Train in and perform submerged arc and 3G flux core steel plate welding under the guidance of experienced welders.
- Follow welding procedures and standards, including AWS and AISC, to ensure quality and compliance.
- Prepare materials for welding by chipping, grinding, and cleaning surfaces.
- Assist in welding structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks.
- Use heat or flame to straighten materials and ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Perform gouging, scarfing, burning, and tack welding as required by project specifications.
- Interpret instructions, blueprints, sketches, and work orders to execute tasks accurately.
- Assist in the assembly and precise handling of materials according to drawings.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, promoting safety and efficiency.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safety protocols and promptly report equipment malfunctions.
- Participate in training and evaluation over a 45-90 day period.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support plant operations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Basic math skills required; proficiency in shop math and mechanical aptitude preferred.
- Ability to safely operate various types of machinery.
- Willingness to learn welding to AWS D1.5 standards and pass related tests.
- Ability to read and interpret shop fabrication drawings and welding symbols.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication skills and ability to work well with others.
- Motivation to learn new skills and collaborate with team members.
- Physically able to perform essential job functions, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
