Overview
The Certified Pipe Welding Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all pipe welding activities comply with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and quality requirements. This role involves inspection, documentation, and coordination with welding crews, engineers, and project management to maintain high-quality weld integrity and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform visual and dimensional inspections of pipe welds in accordance with applicable codes.
- Verify that welding procedures, procedure qualifications, and welder qualifications are current and properly followed.
- Monitor welding activities to ensure compliance with approved welding procedures and project specifications.
- Inspect joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, and welding parameters before, during, and after welding.
- Coordinate and witness non-destructive testing such as RT, UT, MT, PT.
- Identify and document weld defects and non-conformances; ensure proper corrective actions are taken.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, and weld logs.
- Review material traceability and ensure proper use of consumables.
- Communicate with project managers, engineers, and clients regarding inspection results and quality issues.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and site procedures.
- Participate in audits and quality meetings as required.
Requirements
- Valid Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required.
- Additional certifications such as API 570, API 653 are a plus.
- Strong knowledge of pipe welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW).
- Familiarity with piping codes and standards (ASME, AWS).
- Ability to read and interpret isometric drawings, P&IDs, and weld maps.
- Experience with NDT methods and acceptance criteria.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in pipe welding inspection preferred.
- Experience working in field environments, including construction or shutdown projects.
- Strong communication and reporting abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in inspection reporting tools and basic computer skills.

- Field-based role; may involve working in confined spaces, elevated areas, and varying weather conditions.
- May require overtime, night shifts, or weekend work depending on project schedule.
