Overview

The Night Shift Fitter is responsible for welding steel parts for various steel assemblies according to shop drawings and quality requirements. The role involves operating machinery and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Weld steel parts for structural, plate, and miscellaneous steel assemblies per shop drawings.
  • Identify steel shapes, sizes, and mill tolerances.
  • Preheat and cut work pieces using a hand torch when required.
  • Clean welds of excess weld, splatter, or slag using appropriate tools.
  • Fabricate sub-pieces of the overall assembly as trained and instructed.
  • Identify shop drawing errors and discrepancies during fabrication.
  • Operate forklifts, jib cranes, and overhead cranes to move materials.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Consistently work scheduled hours at assigned locations.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out semi-complicated verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective communication skills with co-workers and managers.
  • Ability to work under periodic supervision.
  • Skill in using tape measure or rule.
  • Maintain American Welding Society certification on 1-inch plate in flat position.
  • Pass the fillet weld break test using the gas metal arc welding process.
  • Pass a basic welding test covering shop drawing interpretation and welding processes.
  • Pass a fitting test covering shop drawing interpretation and basic geometry.
  • Ability to interpret cutting lists, shop orders, and shop drawings.
  • Operate a cutting torch to meet American Welding Society specifications.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and work safely.
  • Operate forklifts, jib hoists, and overhead cranes safely.
  • Make adjustments to welder for proper feed rate and temperature.
  • Ability to multitask.
