Overview
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Combination Welder/Shipfitter General Foreman to support 2nd shift operations at their site in Norfolk, VA. The position involves overseeing trades personnel and ensuring safe and efficient production in ship repair and industrial fabrication operations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain understanding of project specifications and requirements for trades support.
- Provide oversight to trades workforce and supervision to meet schedule, budget, quality, and safety goals.
- Support labor requirements for job completion and communicate duties to work teams.
- Manage shop resources by assigning trades personnel based on project needs.
- Assist trades foremen in supervising, training, and evaluating trades personnel.
- Manage lifecycle of shop personnel, including hiring, retention, and performance management.
- Engage in workforce development and support succession planning efforts.
- Break down projects into action plans and ensure adequate resources for production goals.
- Approve and present project deliverables and manage material orders.
- Ensure compliance with technical job aspects and manage test and inspection plans.
- Provide data for current budgets and report scheduling and progress updates.
Requirements
- Must have a Bachelors/Registered Apprentice and at least 2 years of relative trades experience or HS + 6 years trades experience.
- At least 2 years of prior supervisory experience required.
- Demonstrated ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
- Knowledge of AWS D1.1 and NAVSEA code/requirements is required.
- Welding and fitting experience in new industrial fabrication/new construction is necessary.
- At least one year of experience in welding automation is required.
- Ability to understand job specifications, drawings, and technical references is essential.
- Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary.
- Exposure to or experience supporting multiple trades is preferred.
- Experience performing visual inspections of welds and fit-ups is preferred.
- Ability to perform GTAW and SAW is preferred.
- Experience or certification in welding NDT is preferred.
- CWI certification is preferred.
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment, no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships and work in confined spaces.

- Dislocation support available on a case-by-case basis, up to $5,000.
