Overview
The Specialty Welder assembles structural forms such as machinery frames and tanks by laying out, aligning, and welding fabricated, cast, and forged components according to blueprints and metallurgy. The role requires knowledge of various welding techniques and adherence to safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Selects type and size of pipe or other materials and equipment according to specifications.
- Plans layouts, assembly, and welding using knowledge of geometry and physical properties of metals.
- Uses various welding processes including Gas-Metal Arc and Shielded Metal Arc.
- Positions, aligns, and fits components together in various body positions.
- Bolts, clamps, and welds metal components using arc welding equipment.
- Connects cable from welding unit to obtain specified amperage and voltage.
- Starts power supply to produce electric current and strikes arc to generate heat.
- Guides electrode or gun along weld-line to form specified depth of fusion.
- May apply filler rod and clean weld joints using various tools.
- Examines weld for bead size and specifications.
- Loads, transports, and unloads materials and tools.
- Assists in lifting and positioning materials during installation.
- Performs minor maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment.
Requirements
- Respiratory protection may be required.
- Must pass performance tests to meet certification standards.
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with experience in the field.
- Knowledge of commonly-used concepts and procedures in welding.
- Ability to work within precise limits and apply basic mathematics.
- Must visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
