Overview
The Steel Welder & Erector is responsible for welding, assembling, and installing structural steel components according to project specifications, safety standards, and engineering drawings. This role involves both shop and field work, including fabrication, cutting, welding, rigging, and erecting steel structures on commercial, industrial, and municipal projects.
Responsibilities
- Weld structural steel components using MIG, TIG, and/or Stick welding techniques.
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and structural plans.
- Fabricate, assemble, and install beams, columns, stairs, platforms, and other steel components.
- Rig, hoist, and position materials using cranes, lifts, and other heavy equipment.
- Perform cutting, grinding, and preparation of steel materials.
- Ensure all welds meet project specifications, industry codes, and quality standards.
- Install and secure steel components using bolts, welds, and other fastening systems.
- Conduct field measurements and verify alignment and fit-up of structural components.
- Follow all job site safety protocols, including fall protection, PPE requirements, and equipment operation guidelines.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and safe condition.
- Collaborate with project managers, foremen, and other crew members to support job progress.
Requirements
- Proven experience in structural steel welding and erection (2–5 years preferred).
- Certification in welding (AWS or equivalent) preferred but not required.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and welding symbols.
- Strong understanding of rigging practices, material handling, and steel erection methods.
- Proficiency with welding equipment, grinders, torches, lifts, and basic hand tools.
- Ability to work at heights and in various weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license; ability to travel to job sites as required.
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs.
- Ability to climb, bend, kneel, and work at elevated heights.
- Comfort working in outdoor environments and on active construction sites.
