Overview

The Welder Specialty position involves laying out, aligning, and welding various components to assemble structural forms according to blueprints and metallurgy. The role requires knowledge of welding techniques and the ability to work with different materials and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Selects type and size of pipe or other materials according to specifications.
• Plans layouts, assembly, and welding using knowledge of geometry and metal properties.
• Uses various welding processes including Gas-Metal Arc and Shielded Metal Arc.
• Positions, aligns, and fits components together in various body positions.
• Bolts, clamps, and welds metal components using arc welding equipment.
• Connects cable from welding unit to obtain specified amperage and voltage.
• Starts power supply to produce electric current for welding.
• Guides electrode or gun along weld-line to form specified depth of fusion.
• May apply filler rod to supply weld metal manually.
• Cleans or degreases weld joint or workplace as needed.
• Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
• Removes excess weld and defective material using various tools.
• May preheat work piece using hand torch or heating furnace.
• Examines weld for bead size and specifications.
• Loads, transports, and unloads materials and tools.
• Assists in lifting and securing materials during installation.
• Performs minor maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment.

Requirements

• Respiratory protection may be required.
• Must pass performance tests to meet certification standards.
• Responsible for observing safety and project rules.
• May require a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Previous experience in the field or related area is preferred.
• Knowledge of commonly-used concepts and practices in welding.
• Ability to work under immediate supervision.
