Overview

This position performs welding, metal fabrication, and mechanical repair work on vehicles, equipment, and facilities, supporting shop operations through fabrication, installation, diagnostics, and maintenance of mechanical and hydraulic systems. The role requires strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to repair and modify equipment as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Rebuilds, repairs, and fabricates equipment and components requiring cutting, welding, machining, and mechanical repair.
  • Performs repair and maintenance on vehicles, heavy equipment, bridges, signs, posts, guardrails, culverts, and other infrastructure components.
  • Diagnoses mechanical issues and performs necessary repairs on engines, hydraulic systems, and related equipment components.
  • Repairs and services tools, machinery, and shop equipment using appropriate welding and mechanical techniques.
  • Maintains and repairs welding equipment, shop tools, and machinery in proper working condition.
  • Adapts and installs equipment to meet operational needs, including mounting plows, truck boxes, and hydraulic systems.
  • Installs, routes, and repairs hydraulic hoses, lines, pumps, valves, cylinders, and tanks.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Assists mechanics with equipment and vehicle maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.
  • Transports equipment to and from job sites and performs field repairs as needed.
  • Maintains inventory of materials and supplies related to welding and mechanical repairs.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of shop and work areas.
  • Provides support to mechanical staff and other department personnel as required.

Requirements

  • One-year certificate/diploma from an accredited welding program and three (3) years of welding and mechanical repair experience, or at least five (5) years of experience in welding, fabrication, and repair of construction equipment and machinery.
  • Experience in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems including troubleshooting, installation, and repair, preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Class A or B CDL with H and N endorsement must be obtained within one (1) year from date of hire.
  • Flagger certification and HazMat certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques, methods, and practices used in fabrication and repair of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems including engines, hydraulics, and basic electrical components.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices for vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of shop equipment and tools.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and machinery in various working conditions.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with welding and mechanical repair work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply information from complex documents.
  • Ability to read and interpret measurements, perform basic geometric calculations, and apply math in mechanical, welding, and fabrication tasks.
  • Ability to identify and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to make decisions that are sound, well-informed, and timely.
  • Ability to analyze situations, consider various perspectives, and make recommendations or decisions based on logical reasoning.
  • Ability to interpret complex information, recognize patterns, and understand implications.

Additional Information

  • Work requires regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Work frequently requires sitting, using hands to handle, feel, and perform fine motor skills and repetitive motions.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location.
  • Work is in outside weather conditions and in a mechanical shop environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
