Overview

The Artist in Residence - Illinois Shakespeare Festival - Seasonal Technical Director for 2026 is responsible for overseeing the scenic needs of the festival, collaborating with production teams, and managing the Scene Shop operations. The Illinois Shakespeare Festival aims to produce engaging interpretations of theatrical works, employing a diverse staff of professionals and students each summer.

Responsibilities

• Consult with the ISF Production Manager, Scenic Designer, and production teams to facilitate scenic needs.
• Attend design and production meetings from February to July.
• Manage daily operations and schedule for the Scene Shop.
• Supervise the Assistant Technical Director, Scene Shop Supervisor, and seasonal staff.
• Produce scenic construction drawings adhering to safety guidelines.
• Serve as the safety officer for rehearsal and performance spaces.
• Purchase materials for scenic construction.
• Maintain budgets for scenery and associated materials.
• Approve time sheets for hourly employees in scenery and paint staff.
• Develop plans for shifting scenery between productions.
• Manage ISF technical inventory related to scene shop.
• Drive a 16-foot box truck for transportation of scenery and materials.
• Facilitate communication with department heads in Lighting, Prop, Sound, and Costume shops.
• Oversee installation of the stock Courtyard stage at Ewing Cultural Center.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Technical Direction plus 3 years of Professional Credits as a Technical Director or related job.
• Valid U.S. driver's license.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
