Overview

The Shipfitter 2/C position at Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. involves laying out and fabricating metal structural parts for ships, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and performing various duties as assigned. Responsibilities

  • Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames.
  • Brace parts in position within the hull of ships for riveting or welding.
  • Prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts according to specifications.
  • Assist in aligning parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
  • Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories.
  • Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
  • Loft parts from a table of offsets.
  • Make quality cuts with torch or plasma.
  • Flag cranes, figure weights, and rig all types of lifts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One to three years of shipfitting experience desired.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools for constructing marine vessels.
  • Ability to cut and burn with a torch or plasma cutter.
  • Ability to tack weld with 7018, 6011 stainless rod, MIG, and aluminum.
  • Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, or diagram forms.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.

  • Regular attendance at work and ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Employee may be exposed to various hazards found in a heavy industrial shipyard environment.
