Overview
The Shipfitter (New Construction) position at General Dynamics NASSCO involves assembling, cutting, and grinding metal structural parts for ships, requiring skills in welding and blueprint reading. The role includes working in various environments and performing tasks related to ship construction.
Responsibilities
- Lay out work from blueprints.
- Cut, burn, grind, rip out and fit metal structural parts for placement on the ship.
- Tack and weld foundation and structural members.
- Operate high reaching equipment including condors, sky climbers, and scissors lifts.
- Set up tools and equipment at the job site and clean up scrap.
- Operate overhead cranes and use rigging equipment.
- Perform other job duties as assigned relevant to the trade.
Requirements
- Minimum two years of on-the-job experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals.
- Good burning, welding, and craftsmanship skills.
- Mechanical ability preferred.
- T-1 welding certificate required for FCAW; SMAW optional but highly recommended.
- Ability to pass hands-on assessment test conducted by NASSCO.
- Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Must comprehend written and verbal instructions in English.
- Must be able to hear warning signals and read safety instructions.
