Overview

The Shipfitter (Repair) position at General Dynamics NASSCO involves assembling, cutting, and grinding metal structural parts for ships. The role requires a minimum of two years of experience and specific welding certifications, with responsibilities including layout work, welding, and operating various equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lay out work from blueprints.
  • Cut, burn, grind, rip out and fit metal structural parts for placement on ship.
  • Tack and weld foundation and structural members.
  • Operate high reaching equipment including condors, sky climbers, and scissors lift.
  • Set up tools and equipment at job site and clean up scrap.
  • Operate overhead cranes and use rigging equipment.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned relevant to the trade.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years of on-the-job experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals.
  • Good burning, welding, and craftsmanship skills.
  • Mechanical ability preferred.
  • T-1 welding certificate required for FCAW; SMAW optional but recommended.
  • Ability to pass hands-on assessment test conducted by NASSCO.
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must comprehend written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Must be able to hear warning signals and read safety instructions.
