Overview
The Shipfitter (Repair) position at General Dynamics NASSCO involves assembling, cutting, and grinding metal structural parts for ships. The role requires a minimum of two years of experience and specific welding certifications, with responsibilities including layout work, welding, and operating various equipment.
Responsibilities
- Lay out work from blueprints.
- Cut, burn, grind, rip out and fit metal structural parts for placement on ship.
- Tack and weld foundation and structural members.
- Operate high reaching equipment including condors, sky climbers, and scissors lift.
- Set up tools and equipment at job site and clean up scrap.
- Operate overhead cranes and use rigging equipment.
- Perform other job duties as assigned relevant to the trade.
Requirements
- Minimum two years of on-the-job experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals.
- Good burning, welding, and craftsmanship skills.
- Mechanical ability preferred.
- T-1 welding certificate required for FCAW; SMAW optional but recommended.
- Ability to pass hands-on assessment test conducted by NASSCO.
- Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Must comprehend written and verbal instructions in English.
- Must be able to hear warning signals and read safety instructions.
