Job Description

Overview

Die Welders are highly skilled employees responsible for weld repair of dies, inserts and other specialized die components parts and devices used on manufacturing machines in an automotive manufacturing plant. The work requires practical skill and knowledge as a Die Welder to analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate welding equipment, and fit and assemble parts to repair dies and machine components.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze specifications and lay out metal stock.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment.
  • Fit and assemble parts to repair dies and machine components.
  • Interpret specifications, blueprints, manufacturers' manuals, sketches or similar documents.
  • Plan the sequence of components.
  • Perform various welding applications including mig, tig, and arc welding.
  • Detect changes in molten metal flows.
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts or other specifications.
  • Weld in various positions including flat, overhead, curved, and vertical.
  • Perform heat treating and understand tool steel welding requirements.
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes and tolerances of assemblies.
  • File, grind, shim and adjust different parts to fit them together.
  • Perform tests with repaired dies to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Inspect finished die repairs for smoothness, contour conformity and defects.
  • Lift, position and secure machine parts using hoists, vises, v-blocks or angle plates.
  • Measure, mark and scribe metal using instruments such as protractors and micrometers.
  • Design and fabricate metal components using required equipment and hand tools.
  • Select materials based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerances.
  • Perform incidental tasks as required to complete the larger task.
