Overview
Welder 1 is responsible for welding and fabricating projects in a shop setting, including cutting, fitting, tacking, welding, and grinding on various materials. Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, is a large contractor in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry with over 600 employees and extensive experience in multiple states.
Responsibilities
- Position, layout, fit up, cut, and weld material according to shop drawings and supervisor directions.
- Operate tooling and equipment such as a torch, plasma arc cutter, grinder, and pipe bender.
- Work safely in a shop setting around heavy equipment.
- Load and unload equipment and materials.
- Maintain tools as required to perform the job.
- Perform all job duties following company safety rules and proper use of personal protective equipment.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED preferred; vocational training is strongly desired.
- 1-2 years of welding experience preferred.
- Education and/or work-related credentials from a secondary or post-secondary educational system are preferred.
- Understanding of engineering drawings and welding symbols.
- Ability to comprehend a Bill of Material to determine necessary materials and requirements.
- 1 year or more of welding/fabrication work experience that meets or exceeds performance expectations.
- Ability to read and interpret all AWS basic weld symbols and typical welding symbols.
- Frequent use of basic hand and measurement tools.
- Ability to detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed.
- Able to perform physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
