Job Description

Overview

Welder 1 is responsible for welding and fabricating projects in a shop setting, including cutting, fitting, tacking, welding, and grinding on various materials. Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, is a large contractor in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry with over 600 employees and extensive experience in multiple states.

Responsibilities

  • Position, layout, fit up, cut, and weld material according to shop drawings and supervisor directions.
  • Operate tooling and equipment such as a torch, plasma arc cutter, grinder, and pipe bender.
  • Work safely in a shop setting around heavy equipment.
  • Load and unload equipment and materials.
  • Maintain tools as required to perform the job.
  • Perform all job duties following company safety rules and proper use of personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; vocational training is strongly desired.
  • 1-2 years of welding experience preferred.
  • Education and/or work-related credentials from a secondary or post-secondary educational system are preferred.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings and welding symbols.
  • Ability to comprehend a Bill of Material to determine necessary materials and requirements.
  • 1 year or more of welding/fabrication work experience that meets or exceeds performance expectations.
  • Ability to read and interpret all AWS basic weld symbols and typical welding symbols.
  • Frequent use of basic hand and measurement tools.
  • Ability to detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed.
  • Able to perform physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
