Overview
Join a dedicated group of Welder Helpers at Union Pacific, contributing to the maintenance of railroad tracks for over 150 years. As a Welder Helper, you will be involved in essential welding tasks that ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains across North America.
Responsibilities
- Perform track maintenance activities such as repairs, installations, and component removals.
- Utilize load/unload devices to handle and transport track materials and equipment.
- Monitor track conditions for issues or defects and observe the right-of-way and passing trains.
- Operate equipment safely to drive spikes, tighten or loosen track bolts, and remove spikes.
- Maintain the trackbed by replacing and compacting ballast and assisting in unloading ballast from cars.
- Foster positive relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
- Ensure compliance with safety rules, operational guidelines, and regulations set by the Federal Railroad Administration.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Have a valid driver's license.
- Have an acceptable driving record per Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if operating vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater.
- Meet the medical requirements for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the FMCSA.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in Railroad Maintenance of Way work.
- Experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
- Proficiency in a construction-type environment.
- Skilled in operating heavy equipment such as construction or farm machinery.
- Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate.
- Flexibility to work on-call, overtime, various shifts, and up to 7 days a week.
- Successfully pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT).
- Capable of performing physically strenuous work continuously.
- Possess manual dexterity with eye-hand coordination.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 65 lbs and push/pull objects weighing up to 119 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladders and maintain balance on various surfaces.
- Ability to remain standing for more than half of each workday.
