Job Description

Overview

The Welder position involves various welding tasks including positioning parts, selecting tools, and performing repairs on metal objects. The role requires attention to detail and the ability to follow safety and operational guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Positions parts in jigs or fixtures on bench or floor.
  • Selects torch, torch tip, filler rod and flux according to specifications.
  • Connects regulator valves and hoses to gas cylinders and welding torch.
  • Turns regulator valves to activate gas flow and lights torch.
  • Holds torch at proper angle and guides along weld joint.
  • Examines weld for bead size and specifications.
  • Repairs broken or cracked metal objects and fills holes.
  • Applies flux to workpiece instead of filler rod.
  • Preheats workpiece in furnace or with torch.
  • Lays out, positions, and tack welds workpieces.
  • Welds along vertical or overhead weld lines.
  • Chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter.
  • Cleans or degreases parts.
  • Reads job specifications to determine machine adjustments.
  • Sets stops or guides to specified length.
  • Positions workpiece against stops or aligns layout marks.
  • Activates machine to process workpieces.
  • Observes machine operation for defects or malfunctions.
  • Measures workpiece dimensions for accuracy.
  • Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpiece.
  • Performs minor machine maintenance.
  • Assists machine operators with setup and transport of finished workpieces.
  • Rivets and spot welds workpieces.
