Overview

A millwright is a highly skilled industrial mechanic responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and dismantling machinery and equipment in various industrial settings. The role involves working with precision tools and blueprints to ensure efficient and safe machine operation, with onsite training available for those lacking some skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, align, and install industrial machinery and mechanical equipment according to specifications and blueprints.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and repair or replace defective parts.
  • Use precision measuring tools to align shafts, bearings, and gears.
  • Modify or fabricate machine parts when replacements are unavailable.
  • Follow safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and ensure machinery meets operational standards.
  • Interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals to guide installation and repairs.
  • Use cranes, hoists, and rigging gear to safely move heavy machinery into place.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, and hydraulics.
  • Physical strength and stamina for lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Typically requires completion of an apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
