Responsibilities

  • Lay out, position, align, fit together, and weld fabricated parts of structural metal products in the shop.
  • Work from blueprints and use fixtures to assemble frame, body, and some machinable parts.
  • Locate and mark centerlines and reference points onto the workpiece.
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels.
  • Straighten warped or bent parts.
  • Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps for welding or riveting.
  • Use fixtures, clamps, bolts, jacks, hand tools, measuring devices, and welding equipment.
  • Report for work on time and ready to perform.
  • Follow all safe work practices and maintain a clean work area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; must have at least one year of apprenticeship or on-the-job training.
  • Ability to read blueprints efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to use a tape measure accurately.
  • Skills to produce assigned work according to ASME and Merrick Quality designations.
  • Skills to complete .045 E71-T, FCAW, 3G Vertical and .045 E308-L, MIG, 2G Horizontal Weld Certification tests.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables.
  • Ability to interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Certificates in .045 E71-T, FCAW, 3G Vertical and .045 E308-L, MIG, 2G Horizontal Weld Certifications.
