Overview
The Welder position is responsible for maintaining equipment in the Equipment Department through expert welding, cutting, and heating technology. The role involves performing structural and repair welding on various components and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain equipment assigned to the Equipment Department.
- Make repairs through expert use of welding, cutting, and heating technology.
- Fabricate assemblies by cutting, layout, fitting, and welding.
- Perform structural and repair welding on truck frames, railcar bodies, and auxiliary equipment.
- Execute welding processes including SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, and other approved methods.
- Interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and repair procedures.
- Follow approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and ensure compliance.
- Conduct cutting, gouging, fitting, and fabrication as required.
- Inspect welds visually and assist with nondestructive testing when required.
- Maintain tools, welding equipment, and work areas in safe operating condition.
- Complete documentation related to work performed, inspections, and repairs.
- Adhere to all safety, environmental, and transit authority regulations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Four years' experience as a maintenance welder or industrial welder.
- AWS Welder GTAW Certification in horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
- Qualification under AWS D15.1 or equivalent rail welding code.
- Demonstrated ability to pass Welder Qualification Tests (WQT/WQTR).
- Proficiency in multiple welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and WPS documents.
- Knowledge of weld defects, inspection methods, and repair techniques.
- Understanding of heat distortion, metallurgy, and structural integrity.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and varying shop/field environments.
