Overview
We are seeking an experienced Pressure Vessel Weld Shop Supervisor to lead our rectangular box header manufacturing team. This role combines leadership and hands-on welding responsibilities, ensuring that all fabrication and welding activities meet ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section VIII and Section IX requirements.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of ASME code welders and fitters involved in the fabrication of rectangular box headers, nozzles, and related components.
- Perform GTAW, GMAW, SAW, and FCAW welding as needed to support production demands and maintain workflow efficiency.
- Monitor productivity, identify process improvements, and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and quality.
- Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and safety of welding equipment and shop tools.
- Interpret and execute engineering drawings, weld maps, and drawings specific to ASME pressure vessel fabrication.
- Prepare, fit, and align components using jigs, fixtures, and measuring tools to ensure precise assembly and joint integrity.
- Verify that all welds meet the requirements of ASME Section VIII, customer specifications, and company quality standards.
- Collaborate closely with Quality Control inspectors to ensure welds pass required NDE (RT, UT, MT, PT) examinations.
- Maintain and verify accurate documentation, including welder continuity logs, WPS/PQR traceability records, and heat number tracking.
- Operate and maintain welding machines and related fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
- Participate in code inspections and contribute to the continuous improvement of welding processes and quality assurance practices.
- Uphold all safety, environmental, and OSHA regulations in the shop area.
Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience welding in a pressure vessel or heavy fabrication environment, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead role preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership ability with strong communication and team coordination skills.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical welding school or trade certification preferred.
- Valid ASME Section IX welder qualification(s) preferred — preferably with multiple processes and positions (e.g., 3G/4G/6G).
- Commitment to producing high-quality, code-compliant welds with strong attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of ASME Section VIII Division 1 requirements, joint design, and weld symbol interpretation.
- Ability to use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and angle finders to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Proven ability to read and follow detailed fabrication drawings and specifications.
- Excellent workmanship, attention to detail, and commitment to producing code-quality welds.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, stand, bend, and work for extended periods.
- Good eyesight, steady hands, and manual dexterity.
