Overview
The main job of a Structural Ironworker is to build, reinforce and repair iron on steel structures in accordance with design parameters.
Responsibilities
- Studying and analyzing blueprints, diagrams, schematics and work orders to understand what must be completed.
- Unloading, stacking and arranging iron and steel materials at worksites.
- Measuring and cutting components to the correct length.
- Bending and shaping elements to ensure a precise fit.
- Aligning beams and welding them in place to build structures.
- Inspecting work in progress to ensure quality.
- Keeping tools and equipment clean and maintained.
- Adhering to construction health and safety regulations.
Requirements
- Ability to properly utilize shears, hand tools, welding equipment, rod-bending machines, torches and other equipment.
- Analytical skills to interpret diagrams and understand schematics.
- Ability to work with cranes and heavy equipment.
- Verbal communication skills to understand instructions and interact with construction professionals.
- Critical thinking and observation skills to identify structural problems and devise solutions to address them.
- Ability to move heavy materials and equipment.
- Familiarity with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as welding shields, hearing protection and safety gloves.
- Knowledge of ironwork best practices and construction safety standards.
