Overview

The Carman Trainee position at Alaska Railroad provides a training program aimed at helping individuals achieve Journeyman Carmen status, enabling them to perform a variety of inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, servicing, and repair activities on freight and passenger cars. The role requires adherence to various safety regulations and standards within the railroad industry.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a training program consisting of self-study and on-the-job instruction.
  • Learn proper usage of tools and equipment related to railroad maintenance.
  • Read blueprints, sketches, and technical manuals to understand parts and systems.
  • Perform routine inspections, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repairs.
  • Document and certify all repairs performed in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Inspect railroad rolling stock for defective conditions.
  • Perform repairs to freight and passenger car rolling stock using various tools.
  • Conduct air brake tests in compliance with federal safety standards.
  • Provide guidance on proper placement and securement of lading.
  • Respond to derailment situations and participate in re-railing activities.
  • Provide Blue Signal Protection as required.
  • Participate in training of apprentices and other employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One year of practical work experience in a mechanical shop or related environment.
  • Completion of training in welding or heavy equipment is required.
  • Associate’s degree in welding technology or closely related field is preferred.
  • Practical experience in railroad rolling stock maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience in machine shop, sheet metal work, welding fabrication, carpentry, or pipefitting is preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be capable of lifting 60 pounds.
  • Ability to work without more than normal supervision and use measuring instruments.
