Overview

Union Tank Car Company, part of Marmon Holdings and backed by Berkshire Hathaway, is seeking applicants for their production team at a rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. The company values hard work, expertise, and progressive thinking, offering competitive compensation and benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, and side sills.
  • Performs welded repairs using air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
  • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag, or spatter.
  • Repairs, straightens, removes, and reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, and valves using various hand and power tools.
  • Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area and reports potential hazards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test.
  • Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, as permitted by the union contract.
  • Dependable attendance and reliability.
  • Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.
  • Rail industry experience.
  • Tank car knowledge or experience.

Additional Information

  • Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment with regular exposure to physically demanding conditions.
  • Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common.
  • Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to enter tank cars through 20-inch manway openings.
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills.
  • Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols.
  • Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection tasks.
  • On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
