Overview

Responsibilities
- Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, and side sills.
- Performs welded repairs using air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
- Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag, or spatter.
- Repairs, straightens, removes, and reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, and valves using various hand and power tools.
- Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area and reports potential hazards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test.
- Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
- Ability to work any shift, including overtime, as permitted by the union contract.
- Dependable attendance and reliability.
- Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.
- Rail industry experience.
- Tank car knowledge or experience.

Additional Information
- Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment with regular exposure to physically demanding conditions.
- Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common.
- Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces.
- Must be able to enter tank cars through 20-inch manway openings.
- Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation.
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills.
- Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols.
- Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection tasks.
- On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
