Job Description

Overview

The Welder/Fitter is responsible for planning, sequencing, setting up, and performing a variety of operations involved in the layout, fitting, welding, and/or bolting of structural assemblies made from steel beams, plates, angles, channels, and similar materials. This role requires precision, technical expertise, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and sequence work to efficiently complete fabrication and assembly tasks.
  • Lay out and fit structural steel components using rules, squares, bevels, chalk lines, jigs, and fixtures in accordance with drawings and specifications.
  • Operate overhead cranes and hoists to move and position materials.
  • Prepare and use necessary jigs and fixtures for assembly and layout.
  • Establish control points and perform lay-downs for combinations of girders and assemblies.
  • Position and assemble component parts accurately according to blueprints and detailed drawings.
  • Clamp, bolt, and/or tack weld parts together for final welding or bolting.
  • Perform grinding, burning, bending, and straightening operations to achieve correct fit.
  • Identify and report materials or components requiring rework.
  • Check and adjust camber and alignment as specified.
  • Maintain accurate job time and production records.
  • Detect and report faulty operations, defective materials, and drawing errors.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Welder/Fitter or similar role in a structural steel fabrication environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and technical drawings.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, welding equipment, and material handling systems.
  • Skilled in layout, fitting, and assembly of complex structures.
  • Strong understanding of safety standards and best practices.
  • Physical ability to lift, move, and position heavy materials safely.
