Overview
The Specialty Welder position involves certifying on multi-process tubes and requires proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes. The role includes laying out, aligning, and welding various components to assemble structural forms according to blueprints and metallurgy.
Responsibilities
- Selects type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
- Plans layouts, assembly, and welding using knowledge of geometry and metal properties.
- Uses various welding processes including Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, and others.
- Positions, aligns, and fits components together in various body positions.
- Bolts, clamps, and welds metal components using arc and gas welding equipment.
- Connects cable from welding unit to obtain specified amperage and voltage.
- Obtains specified electrode and prepares it for welding.
- Starts power supply to produce electric current for welding.
- Guides electrode or gun along weld-line to form specified depth of fusion.
- May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal.
- Cleans or degreases weld joint or workplace.
- Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
- Removes excess weld, defective material, and slag using various tools.
- Preheats work piece using hand torch or heating furnace.
- Cuts metal plates or structural shapes as needed.
- Examines weld for bead size and specifications.
- Loads, transports, and unloads materials and equipment.
- Assists in lifting, positioning, and securing materials during installation.
- Performs minor maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Assists other mechanics as needed.
- May require respiratory protection.
- Passes employer performance tests to meet certification standards.
- Observes and complies with all safety and project rules.
