Job Description

Overview

The Water/Wastewater Operations Assistant is responsible for performing semi-skilled work functions related to the operations and maintenance of the City’s water treatment plants and water resource recovery facility. This role involves assisting operators and maintenance technicians, performing cleaning and repair tasks, and operating various equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Operators and Maintenance Technicians with inspections of water treatment plant and WRRF processes and equipment.
  • Perform cleaning tasks to keep facilities in good condition.
  • Perform repair and maintenance tasks on machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Perform welding fabrication and repair tasks associated with equipment repairs.
  • Operate heavy and light equipment, machinery, and tools.
  • Haul dirt and grit, shovel sludge and sand, paint fire hydrants, and maintain lawns.
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies.
  • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and landscaping equipment.
  • Assist in the directional flushing plan of the water distribution system.
  • Respond to calls from the public concerning water system problems, complaints, or emergency situations.
  • Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience at a water treatment plant or water resource recovery facility preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain an Alabama Commercial Driver’s Permit within six months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain an Alabama Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B within twelve months of employment.
  • This job classification is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.
