Overview

The City of Burlington is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic to join its Equipment Services Division, which focuses on maintaining a well-functioning fleet for city operations. The role involves performing skilled maintenance and repair work on a variety of heavy and off-road equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, service, and repair heavy trucks, trailers, and various other equipment.
• Perform thorough diagnostic assessments on complex vehicle systems.
• Inspect vehicle components and conduct preventative maintenance.
• Diagnose and repair issues related to mechanical and electronic systems.
• Utilize fleet maintenance software to maintain accurate records.
• Perform essential tire services, including flat tire repairs and replacements.
• Interpret manuals and diagrams to diagnose and repair equipment issues.
• Communicate effectively with fleet operations to ensure repair needs are met.
• Inspect city vehicles for compliance with safety standards.
• Ensure all repair work adheres to safety standards and policies.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
• Extensive work experience in heavy duty equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid NC Driver’s license.
• Class (B) CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain within twelve months.
• Must obtain NCI and OBD II State Inspection Certificate after twelve-month probation.
• Thorough understanding of repair methods and tools for heavy equipment.
• Skilled in using and operating a variety of tools and machinery.
• Proficient in operating diagnostic and testing equipment.
• Capable of using computer systems for record keeping and reporting.
• Ability to interpret diagrams and repair blueprints.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
