Job Description

Overview

The Ironworker is responsible for raising, placing, and connecting girders, columns, and other structural-steel members to form complete structures or frameworks. The work schedule varies depending on the assigned project.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures.
  • Setup hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members.
  • Fasten steel members to cable of hoist using chain, cable or rope.
  • Signal worker operating hoisting equipment to lift and place steel member.
  • Guide member using tag line (rope) to guide it into position.
  • Pull, push or pry steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device.
  • Force members into final position using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks and hand tools.
  • Align holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed member by drift pins or spud wrench through holes.
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using plumb bob and level.
  • Bolt aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.
  • Cut and weld steel members to make alterations, using oxyacetylene welding equipment.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience, one year certificate from a technical school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to calculate rate, ratios and percentages.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.

Additional Information

  • Days and hours vary depending on the assigned project.
  • May be required to travel to different jobsites on limited notice.
  • Position requires working in all elements – heat, cold, rain, or snow – depending on job location and time of year.
  • May require use of personal vehicle for transportation to and from work site.
  • Must be able to utilize job site sanitary facilities.
  • May require work in restricted areas.
  • May require working at various heights, up to 100-feet.
