Overview
The Ironworker is responsible for raising, placing, and connecting girders, columns, and other structural-steel members to form complete structures or frameworks. The work schedule varies depending on the assigned project.
Responsibilities
- Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures.
- Setup hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members.
- Fasten steel members to cable of hoist using chain, cable or rope.
- Signal worker operating hoisting equipment to lift and place steel member.
- Guide member using tag line (rope) to guide it into position.
- Pull, push or pry steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device.
- Force members into final position using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks and hand tools.
- Align holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed member by drift pins or spud wrench through holes.
- Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using plumb bob and level.
- Bolt aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.
- Cut and weld steel members to make alterations, using oxyacetylene welding equipment.
- Maintain a professional appearance.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent GED.
- Minimum of 6 months experience, one year certificate from a technical school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
- Ability to calculate rate, ratios and percentages.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.

- Days and hours vary depending on the assigned project.
- May be required to travel to different jobsites on limited notice.
- Position requires working in all elements – heat, cold, rain, or snow – depending on job location and time of year.
- May require use of personal vehicle for transportation to and from work site.
- Must be able to utilize job site sanitary facilities.
- May require work in restricted areas.
- May require working at various heights, up to 100-feet.
