Job Description

Overview

This position is for two vacancies as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the Public Works Division, responsible for performing preventive maintenance and repairs on County vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose vehicle and equipment performance using testing equipment.
  • Conduct tests on vehicle electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on transmissions, engines, and drive trains.
  • Execute preventive maintenance including fluid and filter changes.
  • May perform collision damage repairs, painting, and bodywork.
  • Operate fuel and service trucks for servicing equipment away from the shop.
  • Prepare records and work order history on repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Order parts and research vehicle and part specifications.
  • Perform field service calls and retrieve disabled vehicles.
  • Work during emergency weather conditions as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of direct work experience in heavy equipment and diesel engine maintenance.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of repair and service manuals for vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Hamilton County work order system and policies.
  • Knowledge of safety codes and regulations.
  • Skill in testing and diagnosing vehicle and equipment performance.
  • Skill in using various tools and equipment.
  • Skill in establishing cooperative working relationships.
  • Skill in welding with gas, stick, and MIG welders.
  • Effective communication skills in oral and written form.

Additional Information

  • Incumbent must furnish all hand tools; specialty tools provided by Hamilton County.
  • Position is essential during inclement weather and requires reporting to work during emergencies.
  • Employees must complete HC Defensive Driving course and/or Emergency Vehicle Operations Course before operating County-owned vehicles.
  • Work requires regular and punctual attendance, may include holidays or weekends.
