Overview

The GEAR UP Department is seeking a part-time GEAR UP Tutor to assist participants in grade 8 at Patti Welder Middle School and/or STEM Middle School with afterschool subject tutoring in Math, Science, and English, as well as support GEAR UP staff in delivering academic skills workshops throughout the school year.

Responsibilities

• Use active listening strategies to allow students to determine content and pace of tutoring.
• Utilize listening and questioning strategies to diagnose student needs and monitor progress.
• Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and cultural competence.
• Utilize teachers’ class notes, students’ feedback, and reflection to improve practice.
• Help students become more confident, successful, self-directed learners.
• Be direct and kind with students.
• Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for student success.
• Be available during scheduled hours to tutor GEAR UP participants.
• Attend all tutor training sessions.
• Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures.
• Communicate frequently with GEAR UP staff.
• Maintain a positive attitude and provide positive feedback.
• Perform other duties as assigned by GEAR UP staff.
• Follow all FERPA guidelines for handling student records.

Requirements

• Associate degree or higher, or three years relevant teaching experience in the subject area(s) to be tutored.
• Professional reference letter is required.
• Knowledge of basic computer skills is required.
• Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
