Overview
The Maintenance/Construction Operator position involves manual and semi-skilled work in maintaining the city's storm sewers, streets, and rights of way. The role requires performing various tasks under close supervision to ensure compliance with construction and maintenance standards.
Responsibilities
- Lays pipe on grade in the construction of storm sewers.
- Digs trenches and lays and joins pipe.
- Mixes mortar and carries mortar and brick for construction.
- Mixes, pours and finishes concrete.
- Operates dump truck to haul materials and pull equipment trailers.
- Ensures job sites are coned off for safety and checks for gases in confined spaces.
- Lays brick for construction and repair of storm sewer manholes.
- Spreads asphalt with hand tools to pave parking lots and streets.
- Grades ditches with hand tools for laying pipe.
- Uses power saw and other tools to cut down trees and bushes.
- Operates small tractors and equipment in the construction and maintenance of storm systems and streets.
- May operate or assist with TV surveillance equipment.
- Erects barricades and places lanterns around work areas.
- May assist in the operation of the jet/vacuum truck.
- Shovels and levels asphalt paving materials for repairs.
- Performs routine maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles.
- Fills out work order forms and keeps daily log books.
- Constructs forms for catch basins and pipe junction boxes.
- Ensures materials and tools are loaded on trucks for scheduled jobs.
- Performs after hours on-call duties.
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent.
- Six months recent experience in installation, repair, and inspection of underground utility work is preferred.
- Must complete and accept Certification of Understanding & CDL Condition of Employment.
- A valid operator's license and an acceptable driving record are required.
- Employees must obtain a Class 'A' Commercial Driver License within 120 days of employment.
- Must be able to report to the workstation within 30 minutes in an emergency.
- Must possess a telephone by the end of the probationary period.
- Applicants are subject to background investigations and drug/alcohol testing.
Additional Information
- Physical Ability Examination is scheduled for May 27, 2026.
- Must be available to work at least 8/10 hours per day, 40 hours per week.
- Must be available for overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must perform duties onsite, except for specific offsite tasks.
