Overview
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Mechanic to join their team in Rock Springs, Wyoming. This position involves maintaining and repairing heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, performing tasks such as engine overhauls, brake system servicing, and hydraulic maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Conducts preventive maintenance and repairs on various automotive or heavy equipment.
- Performs safety inspections on automotive components and heavy equipment vehicles.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct vehicle and equipment problems.
- Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
- Creates repair orders.
- Responsible for inventory of shop, equipment, and supplies.
- Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery.
Requirements
- Associate's Degree.
- 0-2 years of progressive work experience in Heavy Mechanics.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 30 days of employment.
- Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop.
- Preference for applicants who have completed equipment certification exams.
- Welder Certification card for FH&V Fillet and FH&V Grove 3/4" welds is a plus.

- Individuals must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Individuals will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Constant use of manual and powered hand tools.
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
- Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
- Work in adverse environmental conditions.
- Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- This position includes a $50/month tool allowance.
- Occasional overnight travel may be required.
