Overview

The Mechanic III position in the Public Works Department of the City of Plantation involves highly skilled mechanical work at the Journeyman or Master level, focusing on the maintenance and repair of various vehicles and equipment for municipal departments. Employees are at-will and may be terminated at any time.

Responsibilities

• Perform all types of repair work on automotive equipment.
• Conduct advanced diagnostic tests, repairs, and major overhauls of vehicles and specialized equipment.
• Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
• Repair and replace components such as generators and electrical systems.
• Operate various types of equipment, machinery, and specialized tools.
• Design and fabricate parts to repair specialty mechanical equipment.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on small engines.
• Maintain accurate records of all work performed.
• Weld, braze, solder, and cut metals as needed.
• Execute purchase orders authorized by the department director.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 5 years of Journeyman or Master-level experience in automotive mechanics.
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods for automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of diesel repair and large truck repairs.
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
• Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation principles.
• Skill in written and verbal communication.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance on fleet equipment.
• Ability to read and understand manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
• Valid State of Florida driver’s license.
• Possession of a CDL Class 'A' license or ability to obtain.
• ASE certification for Automotive and Med-Heavy Truck T4, T5, T8 at the discretion of the Director.
• Acquire NIMS IS-100C, IS-700D, IS-200C, IS-800D at the discretion of the Director.

Additional Information

• The work requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
