Overview
Custom Steel Supply is a leader in automotive racking with over two decades of manufacturing experience, serving major North American automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. The Welding & Fabrication Manager will oversee daily operations within the heavy steel fabrication and welding department, ensuring high-quality production and compliance with industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Plan, schedule, and oversee daily welding shop activities and production workflows.
- Monitor production schedules to ensure projects are completed on time and within quality standards.
- Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications for production teams.
- Coordinate large-scale fit-ups for complex assemblies while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
- Oversee multi-pass welding on thick-gauge materials to ensure structural integrity and weld penetration.
- Direct crane operations and material handling for large steel plates, beams, and fabricated assemblies.
- Monitor production tonnage and team output to maintain project timelines.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance for welding machines, CNC cutters, cranes, forklifts, and shop equipment.
- Manage inventory levels for raw steel, welding consumables, and gas supplies.
- Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and compliance with AWS standards and customer specifications.
- Oversee Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) processes in accordance with AWS D1.1 standards.
- Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Ensure welders maintain required certifications and qualifications.
- Supervise surface preparation and industrial coating applications.
- Review fabrication drawings and provide mark-ups or corrections as needed.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout the welding shop.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Verify proper use of PPE and safe operation of welding and material handling equipment.
- Conduct safety meetings, training sessions, and incident investigations.
- Hire, train, and supervise welders, fabricators, apprentices, and shop personnel.
- Mentor team members on advanced welding techniques including Flux-Core, MIG, Stick, and TIG welding.
- Train employees on heavy equipment operations including cranes, forklifts, aerial lifts, and rigging.
- Conduct performance evaluations and address attendance or disciplinary matters.
- Foster a productive, team-oriented work environment focused on quality and accountability.
Requirements
- 5+ years of leadership experience in welding or structural steel fabrication.
- Extensive experience with heavy industrial or custom structural steel projects.
- Expert knowledge of Flux-Core Welding (FCAW), MIG Welding (GMAW), Stick Welding (SMAW).
- Strong understanding of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel.
- Experience overseeing multi-pass welding on thick structural materials.
- Ability to read and interpret complex structural blueprints and fabrication drawings.
- Experience with crane operations, rigging, and heavy material handling.
- Strong understanding of fabrication shop operations and workflow management.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification preferred.
- Supervisory or welding management certifications preferred.
