Job Description

Overview

This position is a limited-term appointment for a certified welder assisting in the repair and maintenance of steel highway bridges for the Bureau of Bridges & Structures. The role may last up to two years with potential for extension or permanent placement, though no guarantees are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the repair of steel highway bridges damaged by impacts or weakened by fatigue or corrosion.
  • Install steel temporary supports for various structural elements.
  • Fabricate temporary supports and steel plates for bolted repairs.
  • Straighten and repair minor dents in steel beams by applying heat at appropriate temperatures and locations.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance of all MDOT owned moveable bridges.
  • Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more when repairing structural steel.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school education.
  • No specific experience required for Welder 7 level.
  • Two years of experience as a combination welder using arc and gas welding equipment for Welder 8 level.
  • Four years of experience as a combination welder using arc and gas welding equipment, including one year equivalent to Welder 8 for Welder E9 level.
  • Possess a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A within 12 months.
  • Possess a welder certification and pass test position 3G within six months of appointment.
  • Obtain knuckle boom crane certification within twelve months of hire.

Additional Information

  • Position functions on a twenty-four-hour emergency basis.
  • Selected candidates may be required to pass a pre-employment drug test and physical.
