Job Description

Overview

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Heavy Mechanic to join their team in Basin, Wyoming. Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty equipment and vehicles
  • Assist with diesel and gasoline engine overhauls and tune-ups
  • Repair and maintain brake, steering, and transmission systems
  • Service and troubleshoot hydraulic systems
  • Conduct inspections to ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintenance standards
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment
  • Perform safety inspections on all types of automotive and diesel equipment
  • Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment
  • Rig and fabricate new equipment to district standards
  • Create repair orders
  • Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies
  • Design and fabricate parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment maintenance
  • Interest in heavy equipment repair and diesel technology
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Preference for applicants who have completed any equipment certification exams
  • Welder Certification card for FH&V Fillet and FH&V Grove 3/4" welds is a plus
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License
  • Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests, including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools
  • Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts
  • Knowledge of grease and oil specifications
  • Knowledge of general servicing of equipment
  • Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures
  • Education: Associate's Degree or 0-2 years of progressive work experience in Heavy Mechanics
