Overview
The Mechanic performs intermediate semiskilled work assisting the Lead Mechanic with the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, automobiles, pickups, and small engines. The position requires limited supervision and involves a variety of mechanical tasks and emergency repairs in the field.
Responsibilities
- Functions as a semi-skilled mechanic and assists the lead mechanic.
- Performs mechanical maintenance, repair, and overhaul on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems.
- Operates a welder to straighten, construct, rebuild, or reinforce parts for equipment.
- Conducts general tune-ups using computerized testing equipment and troubleshoots equipment.
- Repairs defects and replaces worn-out parts and components.
- Responds to emergency mechanical repair requests in the field.
- Operates a variety of mechanical and power tools and equipment.
- Maintains necessary records or forms and logs of information.
- Maintains a clean work area.
- Plows snow, hauls material, and works on the signing crew as needed.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, automatic transmissions, cooling and electrical systems.
- Ability to make repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment, including major overhauls.
- Ability to diagnose problems using computerized and electronic test equipment.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment necessary for maintenance and repair.
- Ability to identify, troubleshoot, and develop practical solutions for equipment malfunctions.
- Ability to understand oral and written directions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.
- Associates/Technical degree with coursework in Diesel Technical/Heavy Equipment Technician or related field and moderate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Class B Commercial Driver's License required.
- Class A Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire date.
