Overview
The Highway Worker position at the Highway Department involves operating various trucks and heavy equipment to maintain County roads and rights-of-way. The role requires care and skill to prevent damage and injury while performing routine assignments under moderate supervision.
Responsibilities
- Operate trucks and equipment to clear and maintain County roads, ditches, and rights-of-way.
- Haul, shovel, and spread road materials such as stone, gravel, and asphalt.
- Remove trash and dead animals from roads and rights-of-way.
- Assist in excavating and cleaning ditch/drainage sites and installing guardrails and signs.
- Install temporary signs before work begins.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public at work sites.
- Assist with flagging and traffic control at work sites.
- Clean and maintain vehicles and equipment.
- Perform various manual work functions associated with mechanical or road construction projects.
- Serve on 24-hour call for emergency situations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Working knowledge of OSHA safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment and tools.
- Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including lifting over 50 pounds.
- Knowledge of local geography and ability to read local maps.
- Ability to work alone and in a team environment.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
- Possession of a valid Indiana Class B commercial driver's license within 90 days of hire.
Additional Information
- Duties may involve continuous physical exertion and exposure to outdoor hazards.
- Occasional extended, evening, and weekend hours required.
