Overview
The City of Wichita is seeking a Bus Mechanic to perform semi-skilled maintenance work on buses and related components, supervised by higher-level mechanics or supervisors. This position requires participation in a random drug testing pool and is part of the Transit Teamsters bargaining unit.
Responsibilities
- Perform gasoline engine tune-ups and repairs.
- Lubricate U-joints, steering components, and chassis.
- Service transmissions and rear axles.
- Remove and replace mufflers, tailpipes, and other exhaust components.
- Remove, recondition, replace, and adjust brakes.
- Maintain written records of work performed.
- Perform duties of Bus Mechanic's Helper or Bus Utility Worker when needed.
- Make unassisted trade outs and/or on-street minor repairs to return buses to service.
- Remove, repair, rebuild, or replace diesel and gas engine bolt-on components.
- Remove, repair, rebuild, or replace brakes, pumps, cylinders, suspension, drive train, air conditioning, and electrical systems.
Requirements
- High school diploma.
- One year of experience in maintenance and repair of vehicular equipment.
- Three years of unrestricted licensed driving experience.
- Ability to acquire a valid Class A or Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements within six months of hire.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trade.
- Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals.
- Ability to provide own hand tools as listed in the maintenance plan.
- Ability to climb onto equipment for repairs up to 25' in height.
- Ability to lift and carry bulky objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
Additional Information
- Work hours are from 4:30 PM to 1:00 AM, with days off on Sunday and Thursday.
- Position is part of a random drug testing pool.
