Job Description

Overview

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works. This role involves performing routine maintenance and assisting with complex repairs of City-owned trucks and heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and assist with complex repairs on trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Inspect, test, and repair various vehicle systems including ignition, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles including fluid checks and replacements.
  • Conduct welding and fabrication work for equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Determine materials required for projects and assist in monitoring inventory levels.
  • Prepare and maintain vehicle maintenance logs and records.
  • Operate various machinery, equipment, and tools to complete work assignments.
  • Perform related duties in support of department operations, including state inspections.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to equipment repair.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and other individuals to coordinate work activities.
  • Process documentation associated with department operations.
  • Operate a personal computer for data entry and retrieval.

Requirements

  • An associate degree in Diesel Mechanics or a related field is required.
  • One year of experience in diesel mechanics or a closely related field.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification required within 12 months.
