Overview

The Softgoods Engineering Technologist position at Nexus, a partner company for NASA, involves designing and fabricating innovative softgoods for manned spaceflight programs. The role requires collaboration with engineers and designers to create functional articles that support space exploration while benefiting life on Earth.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and fabricate new functional softgoods articles for the manned spaceflight program.
• Present design concepts and considerations clearly and thoroughly.
• Collaborate with engineers and designers to understand system requirements.
• Take ownership of softgoods design tasks and show initiative.
• Perform sewing machine maintenance, repair, and custom modifications.
• Create patterns and develop mockups for softgoods verification.
• Interpret fabrication drawings to assemble sewn products.
• Seek new manufacturing techniques and innovative materials.
• Occasionally travel to other NASA centers for fabrication and installation.
• Lift and transport materials and equipment as needed.
• Work in confined spaces and scale steps and ladders.

Requirements

• Typically requires a HS diploma and 15 years of experience or a BS in Engineering Technology or related field and 5 years of experience.
• 3+ years' experience in a softgoods lab environment with emphasis on design and fabrication.
• Demonstrated capability to devise solutions to complex design problems.
• Expertise in hands-on fabrication including sewing machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers.
• Demonstrated success working with a team.
• Proficiency in Adobe, AutoCAD, and Rhino CAD software.
