Job Description

Overview

The GSMR Coach Maintenance - Welder I position involves participating in the repair and restoration of railroad rolling stock, specializing in welding and fabrication while also being open to learning additional skills. The role is based in Bryson City, NC, and offers a competitive hourly wage based on experience and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, restore, and construct railroad car rolling stock including windows, walls, HVAC, and plumbing.
  • Provide routine maintenance to generator railcars.
  • Manufacture and repair parts for historic railroad passenger and freight cars.
  • Fabricate parts and components from scratch for various applications.
  • Interpret instructions and specifications, including reading blueprints.
  • Perform equipment inspections to identify necessary repairs and maintenance.
  • Assist in the repair and installation of HVAC systems on railcars.
  • Comply with GSMR procedures, safety, and operating rules.
  • Collaborate with other departments to enhance passenger experiences.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to weld MIG and TIG.
  • Knowledge of structural welding, specifically running 6010 and 7018 in all positions.
  • Ability to weld stainless steel holding tanks and utilize metal fabrication skills.
  • Ability to heat, cut, and braze using oxy-acetylene or oxy-propane torches.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as loaders, forklifts, and tractors.
  • Ability to use various shops and mechanical tools.
  • Willingness to learn and gain additional experience and certifications.
  • Skills in woodworking, basic plumbing, basic electrical, painting, HVAC, and demolition.
  • Effective communication skills in both written and spoken English.
  • Ability to be on your feet for up to 12 hours.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to ascend/descend train steps/ladders and crawl around train cars.
  • Good balance to walk on moving trains and uneven surfaces.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities.
  • Physical ability to climb, crawl, stoop, and bend.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Valid Driver License and ability to pass DMV checks.
  • Must pass a WorkSTEPS physical test and respiratory FIT test.
  • Must pass an internal skills test.
