Job Description

Overview

The Pipefitter position is located in the Maintenance & Operations Section, Engineering Service, at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. The incumbent will work in a complex medical facility that is constantly evolving within a highly competitive geographic area.

Responsibilities

  • Independently interprets instructions, schematics, and blueprints for plumbing systems.
  • Starts up and shuts down equipment, tests for and repairs leaks.
  • Independently lays out jobs per blueprints or schematics without assistance.
  • Inspects competitively bid construction and maintenance projects for compliance with drawings and specifications.
  • Determines and places equipment at the proper levels and points in the systems.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment such as sliding squares and measuring tapes.
  • Employs methods for figuring pipe, joints, and valve sizes needed to support system pressures.
  • Aligns pipes, valves, fittings, and joints for accurate match and installs proper braces and supports.
  • Performs cathodic protection and general maintenance, primes pumps.
  • Installs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, water closets, and hot water storage tanks.
  • Uses tools and equipment like plumb bobs and hydrostatic pumps.
  • Utilizes shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots equipment, evaluates and adjusts equipment.
  • Interprets pump performance curves and maintains seals and bearings.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates lab testing equipment.
  • Figures pressures and fixture units within a system.
  • Installs and operates relief valves, check valves, and pressure regulators.
  • Plans and lays out the installation, modification, and repair of piping systems.
  • Installs steam, water, and sewer piping in large commercial buildings.
  • Repairs and installs high-pressure piping systems and equipment.

Additional Information

  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm
  • Physical Requirements: Must stand a large part of the day, climb ladders, and lift considerable weight.
