Overview
Powell is a manufacturer of switchgear and other electrical equipment, currently hiring a Base Welder at their Southeast Houston manufacturing facility. The role involves welding and fabricating metal components for various structures while adhering to safety protocols and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Work individually or as part of a small team to produce Sheet Metal weldments.
- Determine where each weld is to be performed based on the drawing and meet size and length requirements.
- Perform cosmetic or appearance specifications of the weldment, including grinding and buffing.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
- Basic command of the English language, both written and verbal.
- Ability to execute hot work.
- Ability to finish grind and surface finish based on departmental requirements.
- Ability to repair improper welds.
- Knowledge of fixtures required for area of responsibility.
- Ability to tack weld and stud weld.
- Ability to fine tune voltage and square parts.
- Ability to torch cut and arc metal gouge.
- Basic product knowledge based on departmental needs.
- Knowledge of AWS chart/steel tables and welding symbols.
- Ability to use basic tools like tape measures and clamps.
- Ability to convert decimals to fractions.
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and work in a team environment.
- Awareness and adherence to Lock Out Tag Out procedures.
- Ability to follow company operating procedures, safety rules, and ISO requirements.
- Ability to MIG weld mild steel and stainless steel.
- Ability to perform basic fitting and adjust machines according to department manuals.
- Ability to read drawings and inspect parts for basic dimensions.
- Ability to perform basic layouts and inspect parts against complex engineered drawings.
- Ability to spray transfer MIG weld and examine weld bead for acceptable attributes.
- Ability to identify types of copper and stainless grades.
- Knowledge of flux core and shielded wire.
- Ability to cope and fit.

- Schedule: Monday-Thursday 5:00am-3:30pm; OT as needed.
- Successful candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
