Overview

The Fleet Mechanic D/P position at Georgia Power is part of a maximum 4-year apprenticeship program for qualified mechanics at a Fleet Service Facility. The role involves diagnosing and repairing light and heavy-duty vehicles and requires availability for emergency duties.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and perform major and minor repairs to gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Repair and overhaul power transmission systems including clutches and transmissions.
  • Inspect and repair vehicle braking systems.
  • Diagnose and repair steering mechanisms and controls.
  • Repair vehicle air conditioning systems.
  • Use hand and power tools for vehicle body and chassis repairs.
  • Road test vehicles and inspect them in the shop and field.
  • Perform electrical, hydraulic, and other needed repairs in the field.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and DOT inspections on various equipment.
  • Read and interpret manuals and specifications.
  • Perform welding work and fabricate metal parts for vehicles and equipment.
  • Test aerial devices and operate platforms at elevated heights.
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Documented completion of a 2-year vocational/technical school program in automotive or diesel technology study or 4 years of work experience in a Fleet maintenance facility.
  • Combination of related work experience and training totaling 4 years is acceptable.
  • Successful completion of a high school automotive/diesel work-based learning program and obtaining an automotive/diesel certificate is required.
  • ASE certifications, welding, and hydraulic certifications are a plus.
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repairs on medium/heavy duty trucks and specialized Fleet equipment.
  • Effective communication skills and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and follow instructions.
  • Must have a valid State of Georgia Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
  • Must possess a valid Class 'A' Commercial Driver’s License with air brake certification or a Class 'A' CDL Learner’s Permit.
  • Must be able to lift and/or drag up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Additional Information

  • Position requires availability for after-hours support and storm duty.
  • Candidates must live within a 1-hour commute or be willing to relocate at their own expense.
  • A thorough background check, drug screen, and DOT physical exam will be conducted prior to employment.
