Overview
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking an Equipment Mechanic I or II to perform repair, maintenance, and inspection work for fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction. This role involves working independently on assignments while referring unusual issues to a supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
- Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
- Orders, picks up, and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles including heavy equipment.
- Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
- Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.
- Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
- Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
- Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
- Valid driver’s license required for driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain it within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
- Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years' experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

- Must pass a drug test prior to employment.
- Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
- Will be required to work alternate schedules during emergency response situations.
