Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking an Equipment Mechanic I or II to perform repair, maintenance, and inspection work for fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction. This role involves working independently on assignments while referring unusual issues to a supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Orders, picks up, and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles including heavy equipment.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Valid driver’s license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain it within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years' experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Information

  • Position is based in Houston, TX.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Will be required to work alternate schedules during emergency response situations.
