Overview
Zekelman Industries is a family of companies and the largest independent steel pipe and tube manufacturer in North America, with a legacy dating back to 1877. The Field Welder role at Z Modular involves welding various metals and alloys to support construction, maintenance, and repair projects, with approximately 75% travel required.
Responsibilities
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions using arc welding and other traditional techniques.
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to welding using measuring and alignment tools.
- Examine workpieces for defects and verify conformance to specifications using templates and measuring devices.
- Weld aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other alloys individually or in combination.
- Clamp, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, and secure components to achieve proper fit and configuration.
- Ignite torches, operate welding power supplies, and perform welding operations safely and efficiently.
- Determine appropriate welding equipment and methods based on metallurgy, geometry, and welding requirements.
- Monitor welding processes to prevent overheating, distortion, shrinking, or expansion of materials.
- Operate manual and semi-automatic welding equipment including GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SMAW, plasma arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding systems.
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work orders, specifications, and material safety data sheets to plan welding operations.
- Mark and identify materials with job numbers, piece marks, and other required information.
- Remove rough spots and finish workpieces using grinders, files, and scrapers.
- Develop templates and models based on blueprint dimensions and calculations.
- Position and secure materials using cranes, hoists, wire, and banding equipment.
- Operate metal shaping, straightening, and bending equipment such as brakes and shears.
- Lead and promote safe work practices in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma required.
- Minimum of 3 years of welding experience.
- Welding certificate preferred.
- Eligible to work in the United States.
- Proficient in arc welding and familiar with a variety of welding techniques.
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret weld symbols accurately.
- Ability to read a tape measure and perform fractional calculations.
- Strong understanding of construction and industrial safety practices.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in both manufacturing and field environments.
