Overview

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is offering a free 12-week welder training program in Danville, VA, which is unpaid but includes housing and utilities. Successful participants will be eligible for a welder position at Newport News Shipbuilding with a starting wage of $29+ per hour and a $2500 sign-on bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a 12-week/480 hour training program covering weld safety and OSHA 10 training.
  • Learn and build skills in MIG, TIG, and Flux-Core welding.
  • Perform structural and/or pipe welds in all phases of ship construction.
  • Use various welding processes including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
  • Satisfy all nondestructive tests requirements.
  • Receive additional training including certified visual inspection and troubleshooting minor welding equipment problems.

Requirements

  • Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to work at extreme heights or in small confined spaces.
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test.
  • Must be able to work any shift.

Additional Information

  • Class starts August 14, 2026.
  • Training and lodging in Danville, VA will be provided and paid for by a grant from the Department of War.
  • Participants will be responsible for all other living expenses including meals.
