Job Description

Overview

This position is a limited-term appointment for a certified welder with the Bureau of Bridges & Structures, focusing on the repair and maintenance of steel highway bridges in Michigan. The role may last up to two years with potential for extension or permanent placement, though this is not guaranteed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the repair of steel highway bridges damaged by impacts or weakened by fatigue or corrosion.
  • Install steel temporary supports for various structural elements.
  • Fabricate temporary supports and steel plates for bolted repairs.
  • Straighten and repair minor dents in steel beams by applying heat.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on all MDOT owned moveable bridges.
  • Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • No specific experience required for Welder 7.
  • Two years of experience as a combination welder for Welder 8.
  • Four years of experience as a combination welder, including one year equivalent to a Welder 8 for Welder E9.
  • Possess a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A with N or X endorsement within 12 months of hire.
  • Possess a welder certification as per MDOT specifications and pass test position 3G within six months.
  • Obtain knuckle boom crane certification within twelve months of hire.
